Audience research

Written analysis notes

1.      What would you like to see in a magazine? (Please pick 3 and circle)

Interviews              Free posters/gifts               Gossip column

Chart information           Gig/tour information            Competitions

For my results I have gathered that readers would want to read interviews with bands, as it won with 15 points. However, gig information had 13 votes and free posters had 12, which shows that these were the most popular. As the magazine is off mixed genres, it would make the magazine appeal to a wider audience if gig information was in the magazine as it would attract fans of different genres to go interested in different bands gigs. The gossip column was the least popular with only 3 votes, I will take this into consideration as not many boys would be interested in celeb gossip and my magazine is for both genders so I want it to appeal to them.

What price would you be willing to pay for a monthly magazine with around 50-60 pages?

50p – 99p      12

£1 - £2           8

£3 - £4         0

In my questionnaire I asked how much would people be willing to pay for a monthly magazine and the cheapest option, 50p – 99p, was the most popular with 12 votes. However I think I will price the magazine in the second most popular option £1 - £2, as the magazine would seem too cheap and I want the magazine to seem popular so pricing it in the medium price bracket would make my target audience think it is a successful magazine. Also considering my main target audience is female and males from 16+, they wouldn’t want to spend £3 - £4 each week on a magazine; considering that option that no votes it was clear nobody would be interested in paying that much.

I thought I was important to ask my audience what genre of music they were most interested in. Pop was overall the most popular with 14 votes and then alternative being the second most popular with 11 votes. This shows that my magazine would be popular and successful if it had a few different genres mixed throughout the magazine, but still focusing on popular chart and pop music. Country and classical music were the least popular, which I will not be including in my magazine as there is such a small selected audience for those magazines. Dupstep and rock music were quite popular which I will be including in my magazine to make the magazine seem more interesting as it has different genres of music all in one magazine. Also, seeing as different genres of music are popular in the charts I couldn’t just include pop music in my magazine.

I thought this question was one of the most important questions as it shows how often people would prefer to buy a magazine. Weekly was the most popular option with 11 votes were quarterly only got two votes. I will take this into consideration and publish the magazine weekly considering that I would be including a music chart, which changes daily and comes out weekly. Also, publishing the magazine weekly would ensure I always had enough space in the magazine to put what I wanted in it where as if I published the magazine monthly I would be cutting out important information, where as I wouldn’t be stuck for space if I published it weekly.

Would a free gift such as a CD or free poster influence you more to buy a magazine?

Yes  20

No    0

As all of the people that filled out my questionnaire, all twenty people said that they are more likely to buy a magazine if it has a free gift attached to it. I will be taking this into account and once a month have a free gift such as a CD and fortnightly have free posters inside the magazine to interest my target audience to buy my magazine more regularly.
